Begin in Kritsa, a hillside village known for its traditional streets and long association with weaving and local crafts. Nearby, the church of Panagia Kera is valued for its Byzantine wall paintings and can be added when opening times allow.
This is a compact, unhurried introduction to the character of the Lasithi countryside before the route returns to the coast.
Agios Nikolaos and Lake Voulismeni
Continue to Agios Nikolaos for a walk around Lake Voulismeni, the marina and the waterfront streets. Cafes, shops and sea views make this a useful stop for coffee or free time rather than a rushed photo call.
Boat crossing to Spinalonga
Travel to Elounda or Plaka for the boat to Spinalonga. The fortified islet guarded the entrance to the natural harbour of Elounda and was later used as a leprosy settlement, giving the site both military and social history.
Boat tickets and admission are separate unless confirmed in advance. Spinalonga is on Greece’s UNESCO Tentative List; it is not currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
